The Opentrons Flex external waste chute is a deck fixture for the Opentrons Flex automated pipetting platform. Its purpose is to transfer waste materials from the Flex into a waste container located beneath its exterior opening. The external garbage chute can accept tips, tip racks and well plates placed by Flex pipettes or spinner plate grippers, allowing you to clean up garbage on the equipment faster and more conveniently, thereby reducing equipment residence time and helping To improve Flex performance.

Steps to use

The pre-operated external waste chute is installed in position D3 on the deck and extends approximately 17 cm (7 inches) from the front of the Flex. When installing, you must remove the original door panel and replace it with the one that comes with the external trash chute, while retaining the original door panel for future use. The external garbage chute cannot be installed by one person. Please find a partner to complete the installation together.

Replacing Door Panels 1. Using a 2.5 mm screwdriver, remove the lower hinge screws (two on each hinge, four total) that secure the bottom door panel to the top panel. When loosening the screws, have a partner hold the panel and keep the screws. 2. Use the hinge screws to secure the replacement panel to the hinges. The door panel cutout should face the lower right side of the deck, aligned with slot D3. 3.Tear off the protective film after installing the new door panel. 4. Move the door upward to allow installation of an external garbage chute.

5. Using a 2.5 mm screwdriver, remove the slot plate from slot D3. 6. Select the deck adapter you want to use and place it in deck position D3 flush with the deck. If it's not flush, rotate the adapter and try again. 7. Secure the adapter to the deck using the original 2.5mm slot plate screws. 8. Align the rails under the exterior opening of the external trash chute with the grooves in the deck adapter. Press down firmly and slide the trash chute onto the adapter until it is flush with the deck. 9. Secure the waste chute to the adapter using the 2.5 mm screws provided in the package.

Software Control

The external waste chute is a non-powered accessory and has no electronic or mechanical components to communicate with the Flex automated pipetting platform. You can set it up via the touchscreen or the Opentrons APP to tell the device if an external waste chute is connected. Once configured, the external waste chute can be used in your experiment run automation solution.
